Artist Statement
“Among my most memorable and profound travel experiences are the multiple extended trips I made through Asian countries, including China, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bhutan, Nepal, and Tibet. Learning about local traditions and culture is part of my interest as an artist, and religious beliefs are integral to understanding the people. In this painting, I show three objects representing three different tenets of Buddhism. I have depicted them in dim light to suggest they are only half-realized in human experience. The foreground is lit by candlelight while a bluish moonlight shines from above to project a sense of mystery. The three tenets are compassion, represented by the standing porcelain figure of Kwan Yin; denial of the importance of this world, represented by the wooden meditating Lohan, Nakula; and conquering fear, represented by the porcelain figure of Lohan, Nantimitolo, as he is known in Sanskrit, who is confidently taming the dragon.”
