Description
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is located within the Christian Quarter of the walled Old City. The site is venerated as Golgotha, the Hill of Calvary where Jesus was crucified, and it is said also to contain the place where Jesus was buried. It has been an important pilgrimage destination since at least the 4th century. The Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Armenian Apostolic Churches all have rights to the interior of the tomb, and all three communities celebrate Holy Mass there daily. The last five Stations of The Cross are actually contained inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
The Armenian Shrine marks the spot where the Three Marys and John the Beloved witnessed the Crucifixion.
