Artist Statement
"This plein air pastel was created on a recent painting trip to Northern California. When I work in pastel, I typically sit in a camping chair or on the ground with my five dogs at my feet. I was particularly excited by the Mendocino Headlands because the water on both sides of the rock formations do different things at the same time. Here in this painting, on the ocean side the water glistens in intense sunlight; while on the leeward side the water is in shadow with just a faint hint of glimmer. I wanted to capture this moment when the sun’s forceful glare tapers down and eventually becomes an echo of itself."
