Description
The Blue Plate is one of Nell Walker Warner's finest works. It is a beautifully composed and rendered still life, a genre for which Warner is typically known. The painting was created in a rich, bright palette with loose brushwork that is characteristic of the California Impressionists. Warner graduated from the Los Angeles School of Art & Design in 1916, and during the 1920s in Los Angeles, she further studied with Nicolai Fechin, Fritz Werner, and Paul Lauritz. Warner taught art classes at the Hollywood School for Girls and Westlake School for Girls (1916-1918). Her work received many awards, including First Prize, Artists of the Southwest (1925) and First Prize, California State Fair (1931). The title appears on verso as “The Blue Plate" - written on the stretcher bar in pencil presumably by the artist. The painting is in its original period frame.
