Description
Painted en plein air at Monastery Beach, just south of Carmel and north of Big Sur, Monastery Beach is named for the Carmelite Monastery Mission across Highway 1. This beautiful sandy cove appears serene, but, it is also considered one of the most dangerous beaches in California due to strong rip currents. The surrounding outcropping of rocky spires are characteristic of the area and enhance the precarious mood of the scene.
