Description
"Overseen by the Franciscan Order, the Church of St. Saviour was built in 1885 and renovated in 1985. Part of the Monastery of St. Saviour, it is the parish church for the Christian quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City. The Franciscans’ Custodia Terrae Sanctae (The Order’s oversight of all Catholic sites in the holy Land) is based here.
Rather than portraying the full volume of St. Saviour’s vast and imposing interior, Adams instead condenses his composition and focuses on the main altar. He emphasizes the Crucifix itself by placing it against the yellow marble arch. The altar’s organ pipes enliven the background by reflecting the marble’s bright color."
