Description
The concept behind Gottlieb's allegorical painting, Magic Mirror, is intended to stir one’s imagination into considering life’s many possibilities. A mirror reflects ourselves in truth. However, a mirror may also reflect our subconscious dreams. In this case, a young woman intently gazes into her mirror, but rather than seeing herself, she sees a beautiful sunset. Her mirror becomes a vehicle that liberates her spirit. The white dove flapping its wings at her ankles encourages her to flee into the peaceful scene.
“Gottlieb’s personal fascination with interpreting ephemeral, yet deep, thoughts as a form of poetic idealism in painting prompts a distinct art language that merges the worlds of Realism and Impressionism. By applying the classical skills of the Old Masters, his contemporary subjects are given an enigmatic and timeless appeal.”
