Description
This painting was presumably done en plein air and depicts a harbor scene that the artist clearly wished to remember. It is most likely on the Belgian Coast where the artist maintained a studio in Nieuwpoort, Belgium from 1908 to 1912. Hansen received his early training from his father, Herman Wendelborg Hansen, the celebrated painter of the Old West and frontier life. He later studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute under Arthur Mathews, followed by studies in Stuttgart, Germany with Carlos Grethe from 1903 to 1906. He spent four years as a crew member on fishing trawlers out of Nieuwpoort, Belgium, taking his paints with him. This oil painting, executed in an array of deep, jewel-tone colors, shows fishermen and five fishing boats with their sails raised, lying idle in a harbor, with a busy townscape behind. Hansen’s fascination for coastal subjects and life at sea was a personal interest to him. Hansen is quoted as saying, "Every move I have made and everything that I have done has always been to go back to the water and to the men who gave it its romance."
