Description
This plein air study made by Anna Hills of a village in North Holland, circa 1911, shows an array of fishing boats moored to a quay that has returned from their day of fishing and drying their nets in the late afternoon sun. The boat with the billowy sail on the left indicates that it is windy out, and perhaps the two men on the quay looking on are hoping to launch it. With its saturated colors in green and ochre, fascinating narrative, and complex, detailed composition, this small painting has an impressive presence. In 1908 Hills traveled to Europe to study at the Académie Julian in Paris and spent four years in Europe where she painted in the Netherlands and England.
