Description
This oil painting of boats moored in a harbor, records a scene in the Italian fishing of Chioggia, where Edgar Payne sketched and painted sometime between 1922 and 1924. Payne made many larger, more finished works years later in California based on such loosely rendered oil sketches. However, this is a masterfully detailed plein air study revealing the sardine boats of Chioggia, distinct for their rust-color sails, lined up along a quay, with a village behind, and an abstract explosion of colour in the water reflecting the entire scene. Chioggia is situated on a small island at the southern entrance to the Lagoon of Venice on the Adriatic Sea and is often referred to as “Little Venice.”
