Description
Imbued with soft light from the lantern and full moon, this nocturne oil painting by Mian Situ shows the artist’s masterful ability to bring a moment in time to life. The Autumn Moon Festival has been held annually in San Francisco’s Chinatown district since 1991 to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, approximately six months after the New Year parade, and is hosted by the Chinatown Merchants Association of San Francisco. The young girl in the scene is contemporary, however, she is wearing a traditional silk embroidered tunic from the Qing Dynasty, the last imperial dynasty that ruled China from 1644 to 1911. With this painting, the artist pays homage to China’s Imperial history as a connection to the Chinese people’s rich culture.

Artist Statement
"Chinese celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival in the eighth month of the Lunar calendar year. It is also called the Moon Festival. The setting is Chinatown in San Francisco."
