Artist Statement
"This is the model for the over-life-size sculpture group that was created for Mater Dolorosa in Altadena, CA. Although "Agony in the Garden is the title given to depictions of Jesus praying on the Mount of Olives, the Passionist Fathers renamed this sculpture “Triumph in the Garden” after they saw this design. The upper register is the realm of transcendental prayer, and the lower register depicts Jesus’s words, “The Spirit is willing but the Flesh is weak."
