Artist Statement
“The idea of emergence from darkness into light is a theme that is always close to the surface of my consciousness, and is given the opportunity to be expressed in the deep shadows of a bookcase being lit from above to show the natural beauty and grace of flowers and birds. The setting is casual, but elegant, with a silver vase from my family’s collection of repoussé, and the books each have a special meaning. The first, a book about drawing that embraces my right-brained way of seeing things, the second, a book about songbird identification, and the third is a book of poems by Walt Whitman, a fellow practitioner of the metaphysical. Finally, the theme of emergence is completed with the Lazuli Bunting emerging from the scene into the third dimension.”
