Artist Statement
"Originally built from local sandstone in 1797, the Great Stone Church at Mission San Juan Capistrano was destroyed in 1812 by a powerful earthquake. All that remains are these ruins. My focus was to emphasize the sun's brilliant reflected light on this ancient stone wall, contrasted by the vibrant red Bougainvillea. Standing amidst the historic Southern California ruins, I felt a profound connection to the past, which I aimed to convey through dynamic, bold brushstrokes. The warm sunlight illuminating the weathered stones and casting intricate shadows brought the scene to life. This piece reflects not just a place, but the timeless beauty and enduring spirit of California history."
