Description In Jove Wang’s plein air painting, “La Gare de Chamonix,” the artist shows us a quaint station (La Gare) located in France’s remote town of Chamonix. The distinct red railcar, known as the Mont Blanc Express, creates a striking contrast amidst the white backdrop of Mont Blanc’s foothills that stretch upwards and blend seamlessly into the sky. The railcar is famous for its gracious rides through some of the most magnificent scenery in the world, including views of the highest Alpine peak, Mont Blanc, and the picturesque valleys of Chamonix and Trient. As one of the oldest ski resorts in France, Chamonix was chosen in 1924 to host the first Winter Olympics. Upon reaching the station at Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, mountaineers and skiers the world over feel a sense of exhilaration and are anxious to begin their unique adventures. In this painting, Wang expresses his own feeling of excitement in arriving at this famous destination.
