Description
The picturesque Mara River flows through the plains of Tanzania and Kenya and lies across the Serengeti/Maasai Mara reserve. The area is famous for its Great Migration of diverse ungulates (large mammals), including wildebeests, zebras, rhinoceros, giraffes, and hippopotami that takes place each year from May (Southern Serengeti) and November (Northern Tanzania). While in the Serengeti, Peter Brooke takes advantage of studying and sketching the migrating animals as they stop to graze. His sculpture, "Hippos on the Mara," depicts the relationship between three hippos as they contentedly wallow in the mud along the riverbank. In this moment of exotic nature, the artist masterfully recreated convincing personalities of these impressive mammals.
