Description
This high-keyed, airy plein air painting by Maurice Braun, circa 1920s, depicts a stream meandering through a stand of sycamore trees backdropped by soft lavender rolling hills, shimmers with a diffuse atmospheric haze, signaling the heat of autumn in California. The loosely painted view is executed in a harmonious array of warm reds, yellows, and oranges balanced by subtle greens and blues. The mood overall is one of calm reverie. Maurice Braun was affiliated with the Theosophical Society at Pt. Loma in San Diego, which looked upon art as a way to transmit transcendental ideas.
