Artist Statement
"Lee Vining canyon plunges extremely steeply into the canyon from the east entrance of Yosemite National Park. This is an area I've camped in many times. It's many beautiful features, the cliffs, aspen, pine forests, and juniper trees, plus the creek and meadows and the way the light falls on the canyon, make a real treat for photographers and painters."
—Suzanne Baker

Description
The overall scene, set in the High Sierra, evokes a spirit of freedom and self-reliance. This packing trip began from the old mining town of Lee Vining located at the base of the Sierra Nevada. The rider is leading his packed mule to his campsite situated along the base of a glacial wall.

Remarks
This work is beautifully executed in an atmospheric and three-dimensional quality. Baker's painterly approach is immediate and dynamic. Her knowledge of outdoor light and atmosphere in the High Sierra as well as her familiarity in the subject are authentic, as the artist herself resides in a historic western town located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.
