Artist Statement
"As a young boy, my father often took me to the electric fountain on the corner of Santa Monica and Wilshire Boulevards in Beverly Hills at night. I was captivated by seeing the colored lights change on the 6-foot sculpture of the kneeling Gabrielinio Tongva tribesman in prayer. The changing lights in the pool and on the bas-relief at the base of the column added to the visual experience. The fountain was installed in 1931 and restored in 2016. As a former president of the California Art Club, I was happy to find out that the sculpture and bas-relief were created by Robert Merrill Gage who became the thirteenth president of the California Art Club in 1932."
