Artist Statement
“I am particularly interested in unique lighting effects and how these effects reflect, refract, diffuse and obscure detail. It is the ethereal quality of light that intrigues me. In painting natural or inanimate objects, I am constantly trying to discover and interpret interesting design, shapes, and color harmonies to stimulate the eye. Elevating the human spirit and arousing a sense of discovery is what excites me as an artist.”

Peter Adams Pastel Paintings
The process Peter Adams applies in creating his plein air pastel paintings is immediate and impassioned. Using Canson Mi-Teintes Archival paper, he first applies broad sweeps of his highest key notes and adds layers of varying shades to interpret the vivid colors of nature he is experiencing at that moment. Initially, the work appears in abstract form. Then, he quickly “paints” the scene directly with the tips of his fingers, modeling and designing shapes while carefully assigning each finger to a specific color shade in order to maintain the purity of the colors. To create his signature inner-glow, Adams rubs the medium down to the first layer of his higher-key notes—and the final result is a one-of-a-kind poetic work of art filled with intensity and emotional impact.
