Description
Alfred Mitchell’s plein air oil paintings often measured sixteen by twenty inches, the size that fit his sketch box, and could be easily carried outdoors. In this 16 x 20-inch painting of Mt. Shasta, an active volcano in Northern California, the artist leads the viewer’s eyes upwards through the V-shaped composition displayed by the pine trees in the middle ground. The snow-capped mountains are described with bold strokes of color, including faint pink and lavender, while portraying the foreground valley in lavish strokes of bright green and orange. Though mostly a realistic depiction of the scene, Mitchell’s highly expressive use of color is also evident.
