Artist Statement
"Night Gas and Evening Route are both from a road trip I took by myself last year. Driving from Seattle to San Francisco, I took the Pacific Coast Highway 101 for the trip down. My destination was the Pierre Bonnard exhibit at the Legion of Honor. I sketched and painted plein air every day, driving a little, and then stopping whenever something caught my eye. I find the evening light in the Pacific Northwest to be rich and interesting with its deep blues and night colors that linger a bit longer as summer approaches. As I continued on my road trip, my chosen views became less about pretty vistas and rocky seascapes, and more about my interest in the road itself. Thinking about present-moment awareness as I drove, nearly every mile of road could have justified another attempt at making a painting from what I saw. My state of mind was so submerged in art-making and the ever-present 'now.' I felt a sense of purpose, the road and cars on it acting as a metaphor. Headlights illuminating only what's in front of them."
