Artist Statement
"Everywhere I travel, no matter where in the world, I am always collecting images of freeways, overpasses, bridges, tunnels, and infrastructure. They act as arteries for the distribution of goods and services we are sustained by, but these things also represent something else for me that inspire my creative urges. Infrastructure has an imposed conscientious order, a kind of grid thrown on top of the original natural environment. This "man-made landscape" I often choose to depict is usually seen from the sidewalk or behind the windshield of my car, so I drive with my camera close by at all times. These subjects I gravitate toward allude to my own thoughts and feelings and make me want to tell a visual story. Even if at first I just sense this as the feeling I get from driving over or under a bridge, or through a tunnel. It becomes evident to me as I work on a painting and I can connect my emotions to the work and it's meaning is deciphered for me often during my process. This is very important, that I feel connected to my work in this way. These infrastructure paintings I have included in this ALFA exhibition are akin to my earliest paintings from 20 years ago. Over time, I have continued to explore this subject matter that still uncovers a mystery for me. The massive concrete forms of these heavy, solid, unmoving things are like the ancient architecture of the Greeks and Romans that inspire awe. They represent for me something about the process of repetition in a commute, moving along on a journey, and well mapped roads for discovery into the otherwise unknown".
