Artist Statement
“This painting was inspired by my overwhelming desire to escape Seattle and return home to Southern California. I have driven the Coast Highway a few times en route between the Pacific Northwest and San Diego, always in search of potential subjects for my art, while at the same time avoiding the seeming Zombie Apocalypse to be found along the 5 Freeway. For me, the classic red Mustang is a kind of symbol for simple freedom on the open road. In a way, the setting could be seen as rather timeless, taking place anytime since the mid-1960s. While I am on a long driving trip, I like to imagine myself in this timeless state, unplugged from distractions like my phone, submerged instead in a meditative silence.”
