Description
Applying subtle qualities of color and light, Theodore Lukits created a poetic ambiance in this Depression-era oil painting depicting a rural harvest still life. The scene shows a white ceramic bowl containing perfectly ripe oranges and clusters of firm green and red grapes. At the apex of the skewed pyramid-shaped composition is a copper jug perhaps filled with cold milk. The freshly cut chrysanthemums decorate the table and complement a simple afternoon treat reminiscent of Southern California agriculture in the 1930s.
