Artist Statement
"Both my large field paintings, 'Ojibwe Sunrise' and 'Splintered Hemlock," were created on Madeline Island in Wisconsin over a one-week period and just 20 feet from each other. This particular area is abundant with hemlock and was once Ojibwe tribal land and continues to hold a strong spiritual atmosphere. 'Splintered Hemlock' was painted in afternoon sunlight revealing a recent blow-down after a major storm. Despite the complexity of painting large works en plein air in a forest interior, as well as the scourge of mosquitoes and ticks, it was a peaceful and magical experience."
