Description
This western genre oil painting by F. Grayson Sayre, circa 1925, depicts a rider on horseback and his packhorse heading into a desert landscape with rising purple and snow-capped mountains in the background. The weight of the massive mountains seemingly bears down on the lone figure leading his packhorse through a colorful blooming California desert in the Owens Valley situated east of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Such trips were arduous, requiring a drive across the desert, and an ascent into the nearly inaccessible mountains with a packhorse. Sayre lived and painted the Western frontier, although, by 1925 the Old West had passed mostly into the realm of myth sustained by Hollywood movies.
