Artist Statement
“On one of my many mule-pack trips into the John Muir Wilderness of Big Pine Canyon, I got up very early on our last day to paint a little 8x10 study of first-morning sun on the outcrop across Fifth Lake. It was a fast and furious little study, very crude because we had to pack up camp that morning. It sat in my study pile in my studio for years, and one day I pulled it out and realized I had really captured the feeling of light, despite the roughness of the painting. So I worked up this 14x11 piece; I made it vertical because I wanted the cool dark, shadowed part to lead you up to the grand finale-- that glowing, warming, welcoming sun on the rocks!”
